I had breakfast with a friend and afterwards I wanted to hand out a few little cards with compliments. Melissa, who was a little hesitant to hand out notes to perfect strangers, joined me as I approached a mother and daughter happily enjoying breakfast. I gave the Mom the note and she was so happy she jumped up out of her chair to say thank you. She loves kindness! We also gave one to Joy, who works at Cru Cafe and always gives so much joy to her customers. There were smiles all around.

The science of kindness: Giving compliments can be awkward but its rewards are immense. Neuroscientists have shown that verbal affirmations light up the same areas of the brain as a monetary reward does. So think of giving compliments like handing out money.
