The author and comedian, David Sedaris, spends 3-8 hours a day picking up trash around his home in England. His commitment inspired me to pick up trash, too. Taking advantage of today’s balmy 40 degree weather, I walked along a busy two lane road. It made me smile as I filled up my garbage bag with rubbish. It was so satisfying to dig out frozen beer cans from Mother Earth.

The science of kindness: Research shows that kindness is contagious. When I read about David’s passion for trash (they named a garbage truck after him) it inspired me to pick up trash. The chemicals produced by actively moving and doing a good deed made me happy and helped me stay in the moment. Cost: $0.
