Jan 22 - Blood and Tears

I gave blood today. The last time I visited this blood donation center was as a reporter in 2011. I covered a story on John Sheppard who made the Guinness World Book of Records for most blood donated. We were very close and I described him as my “adopted grandfather.” I had no idea the center had a wall of fame featuring his photos and awards. My article was framed beside it. He passed away three years ago and I think about him all the time. So, I was unexpectedly happy and sad to see him smiling at me. January is blood donor month. Hospitals including Lee Memorial are low on supply and need donors.
